Air Berlin

Air Berlin is now Europes third largest low cost airline, having been been founded in Oregon, USA (due to controls after the war only allowing aircraft from the Allied Powers to land in Berlin).

After German reunification in 1990, the airline received investment from German investors and considerably increased it's number of routes.

In 2004 Air Berlin acquired a 24% stake in Lauda Air, the airline founded by Nikki Lauda, and in 2006, acquired dba.

Unlike other low cost airlines, Air Berlin achieves efficiency by routing via hubs, meaning a change of planes, but timed to still give a reasonable overall traveling time.

Air Berlin/dba carried over 19 million passengers in 2006
