Virgin Atlantic started flying from London to New York in 1984 with a single leased Boeing 747, with a second aircraft added in 1986 flying London to Miami, with similar expansion in the following years.
In 1999, Singapore airlines bought 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic and expansion has increased further, with the airline now having a fleet of around 37 aircraft (Boeing and Airbus) and carried 4.9 million passengers in 2006 in 3 classes, Economy, Premium Economy and Upper Class
