Map showing location of Bahamas

Totaling 700 islands, (including a large number of keys or uninhabited rocks) the Bahamas run from a point east of Florida towards Cuba and the Dominican Republic, forming an English speaking commonwealth, whose first European visitor was Christopher Columbus in 1492.

The capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, is on the island of New Providence.

The area has a subtropical climate being approximately 2000Km north of the equator and the exceptionally clear waters of the shallow seas are a haven for diving and fishing.

The sea water has infact been scientifically proven to be the clearest in the world, giving a visibility of 200ft. The islands themselves are formed of Calcium Carbonate, most of which originates from coral.

There are sea and air links to the other islands in the Bahamas from the capital, Nassau.
